Power Tip #1
Change the way you use PowerPoint with one of these two techniques.
1) Use the “Coffee Break” Technique. We call it that because you consciously give your audience a break from your homogenous, boring slide deck. Choose from these three types of breaks:
a) Insert a black slide or use your remote to blacken the screen –
by doing this you change where the focus is in the room
b) Use “key word” slides -
these are slides with just a few key words set against either black or vivid backgrounds
c) Use a full slide picture image –
forget the template and insert an image that links to a key concept you are making
2) Use the “On Call” Technique. In this case you only use PowerPoint for 2-5 key slides during your presentation. You don’t start or end with PowerPoint – that time is reserved for you to create connection and make closure. Use PowerPoint for those slides that require charts, graphs, diagrams or key visuals to support a point.
Power Tip # 2
Include a three-dimensional element to your presentation because it creates interest and energy when you present. Here are some business props that you can and should be using.
a) If you mention an e-mail or a letter in your talk, pull it out and reference it.
b) If you mention statistics or figures, put them on a note card and reference the details from the card.
c) If you mention an article, bring the magazine or newspaper.
d) If you refer to a product or product literature, bring it and show it.
e) Consider use a prop as a metaphor for your key point. An example would be a lemon to emphasize making how to uncover an opportunity from a problem: Making lemonade out of lemons.
Power Tip # 3
Add Some Personality. Don’t be afraid to make your presentation enjoyable. Here are three easy ways to make your presentation more enjoyable and send the message that you are more approachable and friendly. a) Tell a story. Give a short person example of your point that lasts 15 – 60 seconds. b) Share a cartoon. Lots of great cartoons can be found at cartoonbank.com c) Insert a humorous photo. They can be a great way to make a point.
When you apply these three tips your presentation becomes more memorable, interesting and engaging. For more tips and ideas visit our Presentation Tips and Articles.
